The Sussex Air Ambulance operates from Dunsfold Park, Cranleigh and is part of the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance Trust, a registered charity which aims to come to the assistance of sick and injured people in the region by providing a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS).
Our two helicopters operate with a highly skilled doctor and critical care paramedic on board, which means we can bring the A&E department to the patient at the scene of the emergency within minutes. Our medics take to the scene of an incident the expertise and equipment that would normally only be found in the resuscitation area of an emergency department and have even performed open heart surgery as modern trauma care dictates that certain clinically emergency procedures should be performed before moving the patient. It’s not just about saving lives but affecting the quality of survival to a considerable degree.
We can reach any part of the counties we cover in less than 20 minutes of a 999 call coming in. But we are not just fast ambulances. Our work also supports specialist care, safety awareness, disaster preparedness, trauma research and clinical progress.
An average of five serious accidents happen on the roads of Kent, Surrey and Sussex every day. However, road accidents only account for about a third of emergencies we attend as we also respond to heart attacks, traumatic brain injuries, life threatening medical emergencies and paediatric trauma.
On average each Air Ambulance responds to approximately three or four emergencies every day, 365 days a year.
